Lesson Plan: STEM in Construction

Why are we doing this?

The M7-M12 Integration project and John Holland are shining a light on female construction workers. We’re showing the next generation that careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) are for all genders.

Success Criteria

  • Understand that jobs in science, technology, engineering and maths are available to everyone.

  • Use engineering skills to design and build a bridge that withstands a high load

What does the Lesson Plan cover?

  • Interactive activities challenging gender stereotypes for different careers

  • Showcasing historical female STEM inventors behind the creations of WiFi, the Brooklyn Bridge, the refrigerator and more.

  • Short videos highlighting different roles in construction

  • Hands on bridge building challenge
